NaNo 2012, Day 5

Nano Participant 2012So, NaNo day 5 and I’m already behind. I usually start out racing because I know I’ll slow down later, but this didn’t happen this year for a variety of reasons.

I got a new freelance contract that’s taking up both time and creative energy (I get to learn something new, so it’s fun, but draws from the same resource pool).

I was swamped with programming so never got the chance to go over my outline (which I’d written two years earlier and before I wrote book 1, so things changed).

And I chose to write a sequel, which means I don’t have the flexibility to do whatever–the events must reflect on and tie into what has come before.

I do NaNo because each year it teaches me something. I’ll admit sometimes the lessons come as reminders (like don’t start before you’ve got the outline ready :p) rather than something I didn’t know, but it’s a good lesson in writing to deadline, and really hammers in what works and what doesn’t for me.

So what drives you to NaNo? And is this year working out for you?

I’m a bit slow but I’m sooo enjoying writing this story. Not sure if it’ll endup a horror or supernatural mystery.lol
It kinda has a horror feel. I have never wrote a horror. ONe because I don’t like the gory stuff.lol So I’m wondering If I can pull this off.

I used to think that way about horror, but then I read a couple psychological horrors. It doesn’t have to be about the gore. Good luck, but don’t worry about it too much. Focus on getting a story. What it is can be fine-tuned in the edit.

LOL And as a result of all that writing. I have missed that typo.Crap.

The shear rush and challenge drives me.

I love NaNo because it gives me freedom to experiment. Sure, I try new things all the time, but there’s something about the camaraderie and support during NaNo that makes it easier. And I learn things about myself and writing, too.

    Good luck catching up!

    • Margaret McGaffey Fisk says:

Good point about the experimentation, and people are more available for brainstorming too, I’ll bet. Heck, we should be writing, but…

And thanks. I am not worried yet. The deficit is steep, but not insurmountable.

NaNo is treating me really well this year. It is the first time I have done an outline so I feel like each time I go to write I know where I am going. So the words are coming!

    • Margaret McGaffey Fisk says:

Wonderful :). That’s just why I prefer to have a viable outline to start. Then I can spend my time writing instead of plotting.

  6. Linda says:

I’m a bit ahead with my NaNo this year. I have a lot of support in the household, which helps.

Good luck to you all. 🙂

    • Margaret McGaffey Fisk says:

Nice :). Being ahead, and having support, is great. I was much further behind at one point and my hubby pushed me to get a decent amount the next day.
