Choose My Next Book

I noticed Wednesday approaching and realized I wasn’t reading fast enough to finish Way of the Wizard edited by John Joseph Adams in time (I read short fiction slower because my mind has to start over with each story). To make sure I had something to talk about today, I started a novel on the side, The Decoy Princess by Dawn Cook. This book came well recommended, and I’m enjoying it so far, but Way of the Wizard kept pulling me back because the stories in that collection are solid. I already pointed out one, but I can’t remember a single story in the collection that didn’t strike me as wonderful for one reason or another, a rare event. Added to the fact that the collection is over 500 pages long, and it’ll take me another week to reach the end. However, it’s too entertaining to shift to a book I might have finished in time for this week.

Rather than reviewing something that slipped through the cracks earlier in the year, I decided I’ll see what you all think I should take on next (once I finish both the anthology and The Decoy Princess of course).

A quick glance at my “to be read” pile offers:

The next in the Song of Ice and Fire by George R.R. Martin (No, I’m not up to Dances with Dragons yet.)
Unsympathetic Magic by Laura Resnick
Something Wicked by Michelle Rowen
Guardian of the Trust by Irene Radford
Hastur Lord by Marian Zimmer Bradley and Deborah J. Ross
Night of the Wolves by Heather Graham
Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

There are many more on the pile, but this is enough to choose between for now, don’t you think? So, of this list, what would you vote for? Or feel free to offer another suggestion.

  1. I love The Hunger Games and its two sequels, even if the end is less good than the books (no spoilers, I promise!). I don’t know the other books.

    Bonne lecture! ^^

Thanks. I picked this book up because of a strong recommendation, and looking at the comments, it’s the hands down winner for the next read. I wasn’t expecting such agreement :).

  2. The only book I’ve read of your list, honestly, is Hunger Games, the trilogy. It’s very good, an unstoppable force of a read.

In my humble opinion you should read that trilogy next. 🙂 Just sayin’…

    Cheers to your search..
And here’s to whittling down the TBR pile,
    Chris

    • MarFisk says:

LOL! Unstoppable is good. But I signed on for one book…not THREE! Yeah, well, I’m on book three of Fire and Ice already, so I can’t quite say I don’t like trilogies, can I?

Read Hunger Games and tell me if it’s as good as I’ve heard. It’s been multiply recommended to me, but I haven’t gotten around to it…

    • MarFisk says:

Ditto. I kept meaning to get it out of the library but never managed. Finally gave in when I was at the bookstore, and then they didn’t have a copy. Said they were always running out. But the next time I went, I got it.

BTW, when I’m reading short stories or very dense books that I can’t read in large bits, I read at the table (OK, I live alone, so that’s easier for me) or in the bathroom. You can read one and walk away to digest it, and come back later for another bit.

    • MarFisk says:

Yup. That’s how I read them too, but I’ve got so much to do, and my “spare” time I spend with my family, so that’s all the reading time I get…umm, when I’m not editing or critting at the table that is.

  5. Sue Santore says:

I vote for the Hunger Games because it’s the only one (three?) of the pile of books you listed that I have read. And–because it is a good story. I say, story, because you need to read all three of them, preferable one right after the other.

    • MarFisk says:

Hmm, interesting. Thanks for the rec, and the warning. I only have the one right now, but if you’re right, I’ll have to get the others right quick :).

  6. Maddi Frayne says:

I’ve never read any of those, so I’m going to be evil and add yet another to your pile!

Scent of Shadows, by Vicki Pettersson–superheroes in Las Vegas. This is a favorite and I re-read the series at least once a year.

    ;P

    • MarFisk says:

How mean, cruel and unkind ;). I think I’ve got a Vicki Pettersson somewhere in my piles, but if not, I can add this to the list. Superheroes in LV sounds fun.

  7. I just finished Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold, and I thought it was great.

Of the ones on the list I’d go with Hastur Lord. When did that come out?

  8. MarFisk says:

Hmm, I’ve been meaning to read Cryoburn :). And Hastur Lord came out March of this year. I picked it up because I’m an old-time Darkover fan, but hadn’t realized Deborah was continuing the series.
