Good tips about what to look for when evaluating where your novel starts. Beginnings are something I struggle with (had to rewrite the beginning of my most recent draft three times in the edit), so knowing what to look for is important. However, not sure I’d listen on the putting it away for so long. First off, I’ve never succeeded, even after years, in finding that neutral point. Secondly, it’s a good way to end up with a ton of first drafts and no real understanding of editing. So yes, put it away, work on something else, but don’t leave it too long:
