Philosophy
This is a fascinating article looking at the socio-political roots of how writing and narrative is taught, comparing it to Kishotenketsu, an Eastern narrative structure, that does not require conflict for plot, and therefore doesn’t require violence. This is interesting as a potential for different narrative forms, but also as to the questions it raises about romance novels and how they moved from straight romance to thriller, mystery, etc. romance and soon into a broader public acceptability. It makes me wonder if the lack of violent conflict was holding them back in the Western concept of narrative. Regardless, worth reading and pondering. I’m filing this under philosophy because of the implications, but it has writing implications as well.

Creativity (Writing)
I started following John Anealio for his fun music, and the push of his song about writing. This is an excellent post about writing and creativity. Recognizing the wonder of what we have and the need to keep perfecting it:

*sigh* I clicked through because I wanted to read the sleep article. Sadly, no help there for me. Everyone says that exercise is supposed to help you sleep better, but since I started up again on Monday, I haven’t had a decent night’s sleep. Ah, well.
Thanks for the links!
Hugs. Yeah, sleep issues are so varied that it’s tough figuring out your specific issue.
I stole your philosophy link and posted it on my facebook page. I noted that I got it from my friend Margaret and I hope you don’t mind.
I think it’s worth exploring conflict-free narrative. Can we teach ourselves to think in other ways besides the “I win, you lose” Western way? What about combining the techniques? It seems to me that if you’re writing something that’s not an adventure or thriller that depends entirely on ratcheting up the conflict, the kishōtenketsu technique might be a good way to get that bit of rest that’s often necessary without being boring.
No problem. You don’t even have to say where you got it as far as I’m concerned. I’m not sure where I got most of these because I read from so many sources. The point is to share information, and it looks like you got that point and kept it rolling :).
