This is a pet peeve of mine because I’m not one of the “run for the dictionary while reading” folks, but this blog post makes its point quickly and conclusively. If you’re going to use words your readers might not know, provide enough context for them to understand the word:
Fascinating adaptation in the fairy wren to distinguish their chicks from those hatched from deposited eggs.
