Truffle Hunting (Life)

I knew pigs hunted truffles—even used this fact for an amusing moment in A Country Masquerade—but I hadn’t remembered dogs could do the same. A short but interesting interview with truffle hunters in the Marche region of Italy. Note: it auto starts with sound.

Treatment (Medicine)

An interesting, though long, article examining the influence of generalization on medical treatment. I’ve experienced the “treat by the average” process myself, which led me to switch to a doctor who saw me as an individual. This article looks at the way that philosophy has affected prescription medication and screening tests.

Gender (Sociology)

A look at reactions to voice pitches which complicate even honest efforts to treat people equally. Note: auto starts with sound.

Humor (Writing)

Okay, writing techniques isn’t really the intention of this article, but it does provide some good steps to getting started. I use a lot of funny moments in my non-fiction. It wasn’t so easy in my fiction until I discovered an anthology I was writing for was humorous SF. So maybe this article will help you inject some humor into whatever you’re writing.

I noticed you’ve been posting some articles from Firepole Marketing. I’ve been reading their stuff for a while. I think they’re a good company with very useful information. After we move, I’m going to finish their Audience Business Masterclass. I’d started it, but when Mom got sick enough to require me to be a full-time caregiver, I had to put it aside. I’m not going to have time to really focus until we’ve found a house in wherever we end up. We keep coming back to Vancouver, WA. That’s off topic, but the point is that I’m looking forward to using their techniques with my writing and my food blog. 🙂

I find their techniques often make sense even when they might not make sense for me, which is why I share them. I also think their approach and attitude is refreshing, part of why I keep reading their articles :).
