Panelist at Convolution 2014 Sept 26-28

Convolution 2014I mentioned earlier this summer that I’d been invited to be a panelist on a new-to-me Bay Area convention called Convolution. This is their third year, and if the plans for the previous ones resembled this programming schedule, I’m sorry to have missed them.

There are a ton of interesting things going on, so if you’re going to be in the area, you really should check it out. I’m looking forward to fascinating discussions, both in the panels and the hallways, as well as a weekend with readers, writers, and other creative-minded folks in a variety of ways.

My schedule for the con is below, but I wanted to highlight two events I’m involved, both of which are firsts:

1) I will be reading two short scenes from Secrets that provide a taste of the two main characters and their challenges. Though I did read my winning Parsec short story at Confluence, I have never done a reading from one of my longer works. I’d love for you to drop in if you’re at the con. As you’ll see in the schedule below, I’m scheduled to read with a number of other authors at 4pm on Friday.

And if you’ve read any of my titles and have a passage you’d enjoy hearing, drop it in the comments. No guarantees, but I’ve been thinking of recording some podcast readings for posting here, so you might get to hear it “live.” I’m going to test this by recording one of my practice sessions. If that goes well, I’ll post it some time next week.

2) I had suggested a space for BayCon where, similar to a NaNo Write-In, creatives of all types and at all stages have the opportunity to work on their projects during the con. Well, it turned out my suggestion came too late for this year, but Convolution has adopted it as well with a writing focus. Too often I go with the intention of using a spare moment and the exhilarating con energy to push ahead on something only to find it too hard to slot in. That’s exactly what this time is meant to encourage. I’m moderating the first session at 2pm on Friday, September 26th, but I hope to drop in for as many as I can manage. If you’re coming to the con, try to make a session and see what progress you can achieve with a quiet room filled with creative vibes.

My schedule (also in the scheduling tool here):

Friday, September 26

14:00 (2pm) A Clean Well Lighted Place to Write #1
16:00 (4pm) Reading #1 (with Amy Sterling Casil, Lillian Csernica, Matt Maxwell, Christopher Villa, and me)

Saturday, September 27

10:00 (10am) How To: A publishing panel for authors or artists
12:00 (12pm) Storytelling the Old Fashioned Way.

Sunday, September 28

14:00 (2pm) If this is a room of my own, why is it covered in LEGO?

As with BayCon, I plan to keep an eye on my Twitter feed when I can, so if you want to catch me, drop me a note there. I’m @MarFisk. I’ve also set reminders half an hour before each of my panels/events (at the beginning of the passing time) in case you want to drop by.
